how to recover winload.exe corrupt or missing (0xc0000221)

It can be a hassle to always have a floppy disk around and some machines don't even have a floppy drive. To solve this one can try to add the 3rd party drivers to the recovery console installation.
  1. Install the Recovery Console
  2. Go to the %systemroot%\cmdcons
  3. Copy your driver raidcntr.sys to %systemroot%\cmdcons
  4. Make a copy of the %systemroot%\cmdcons\txtsetup.sif for backup in case something goes wrong
  5. Open the %systemroot%\cmdcons\txtsetup.sif with a text editor
  6. Search for the text "ultra66" and you should find:
    ultra66.sys = 1,,,,,,3_,4,1
    Make a copy of the line and place it below and change ultra.sys to raidcntr.sys :
    raidcntr.sys = 1,,,,,,3_,4,1
  7. Search again for the text "ultra66" and you should find:
    PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_4D38 = "ultra66"
    Now open the TXTSETUP.OEM which comes with your driver raidcntr.sys and find the Hardware Id of your controller. Ex.:
    [HardwareIds.scsi.raid_win200]
    id = "PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_0D30&SUBSYS_4D33105A","raidcntr"
    Create a new line under "ultra66"-line using the Hardware Id for your controller. Ex.
    PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_0D30&SUBSYS_4D33105A = "raidcntr"
  8. Search again for the text "ultra66" and you should find:
    ultra66 = ultra66.sys,4
    Make a copy of the line and change the ultra66 to raidcntr:
    raidcntr = raidcntr.sys,4
  9. Search again for the text "ultra66" and you should find:
    ultra66 = "Promise Technology Inc. Ultra66 IDE Controller"
    Make a copy of the line and change the text to something you like:
    raidcntr = "My Personal RAID Controller"
  10. Save the txtsetup.sif file and reboot and select the Recovery Console at the boot menu
Note the above guidelines have worked fine with an A7V Onboard Promise Fasttrak100 controller.

When the system begins to POST are you able to hit F8 a few times and try to access the Recovery Screen?  If so are you able to use LAST KNOWN good configuration to see if you are able to get backup and running?

If not, can you boot into Safemode from that F8 screen?

If those options aren't available, the best step would be to get your Windows Vista Recovery CD and boot to it and run the STARTUP REPAIR options.

Here is a Help and How to article about the STARTUP Recovery options.

Also, see the following links for further information involving the winload error

You may also want to review the information about Windows PE CD.  If you do not have your Original Windows CD.

Window Xp Tricks:Quicker Startups

Enable Quicker Startups with a Boot Defragment:

There is a way to speed up XP startup: make your system do a boot defragment, which will put all the boot files next to one another on your hard disk. When boot files are in close proximity to one another, your system will start faster.

On most systems, boot defragment should be enabled by default, but it may not be on yours, or it may have been changed inadvertently. To make sure that boot defragment is enabled on your system, run the Registry Editor [Hack #68], and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
Edit the Enable string value to Y if it is not already set to Y. Exit the Registry and reboot. The next time you reboot, you'll do a boot defragment.

There is a simple trick to make your Windows XP, Windows 7 computer startup process faster. Your computer will take only 10 seconds to complete startup process after implementing this trick on your windows computer. Generally a windows XP computer takes some time to complete startup process. Besides Windows 7 computer takes more time comparatively. You have to wait while starting your computer so that it completes startup process then you can continue your work.
Earlier we have discussed simple trick to Shut down computer instantly. There are simple settings in Windows XP, Windows 7 computers called StartupDelaywhich is set up to higher value by default. This causes some delay while making startup process on your computer. But you can assign lower values to make windows startup process faster.

You can follow simple steps given below to make your windows XP, Windows 7 computer startup process faster: -

  • Go to Start >> Run. Type regedit in it and hit Enter
  • This command will open registry editor. Now browser registry editor folders as HKEY_LOACAL_MECHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContr olContentIndex
make-computer-startup-faster
  • You will see a key named StartupDelay in right hand side panel. Double click on this key.
  • A new pop up settings window will open. By default, Here Value data is assigned some higher value which makes windows startup process slower. Change value data to some lower value like 30000.
start-windows-computer-faster
  • Now press OK.
Second Step.
Your computer initiates some processes automatically while starting windows. These programs takes some time to start and can make windows start up process slower. You can disable these extra programs which will not start automatically on windows startup.

Just follow these simple steps to disable extra programs: -

A Sneak Peek of Android 3.0, Honeycomb

LinkThe past few weeks have been exciting ones for the Android team: we recently released Nexus S and Android 2.3, Gingerbread, and we’ve even had some of our most popular team members take a trip to space. But we haven’t stopped buzzing with excitement: today at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, we previewed Android 3.0, Honeycomb.

Honeycomb is the next version of the Android platform, designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. We’ve spent a lot of time refining the user experience in Honeycomb, and we’ve developed a brand new, truly virtual and holographic user interface. Many of Android’s existing features will really shine on Honeycomb: refined multi-tasking, elegant notifications, access to over 100,000 apps on Android Market, home screen customization with a new 3D experience and redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive. We’ve also made some powerful upgrades to the web browser, including tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, syncing with your Google Chrome bookmarks, and incognito mode for private browsing.

Honeycomb also features the latest Google Mobile innovations including Google Maps 5 with 3D interactions and offline reliability, access to over 3 million Google eBooks, and Google Talk, which now allows you to video and voice chat with any other Google Talk enabled device (PC, tablet, etc).

Please stay tuned for more Honeycomb news from the Android team. For now, you can get a taste of Honeycomb by checking out this video.

STARTUP AND STUTDOWM Trick

START UP AND SHUTDOWN

A grab bag of ways to customize the way you start up and shut down your system.

There are many small ways that you can control the way you start up and shut down your PC. This grab bag of four hacks shows you the best of them.

1.7.1 Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts
Turning off or rebooting XP involves a several-step process: click the Start menu, choose Shut Down, and then select Shut Down or Restart. If you want, however, you can exit or reboot much more quickly, by creating a shortcut that enables one-click shutdowns. You can also use the shortcut to customize the shutdown or reboot—for example, by displaying a specific message or automatically shutting down any programs that are running.

First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC.

But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this:

shutdown -r -t 01 -c "Rebooting your PC"
Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message "Rebooting your PC." The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it. Table 1-3 lists all of them and describes their use.

I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop—one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use:

shutdown -s -t 03 -c "See you later!"
shutdown -r -t 03 -c "You can't get rid of me that quickly!"
Table 1-3. Switches you can use with shutdown Switch
What it does

-s
Shuts down the PC.

-l
Logs off the current user.

-t nn
Indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action.

-c "messagetext"
Displays a message
